Startling Slip In Manawatu Gorge
[Special lo Northern Advocate"'] HASTINGS. This Day. When the south-bound NapierWcllington express was passing through the Manawatu Gorge at 12.30 p.m. yesterday, a big slip suddenly poured over the engine and tender. No one was injured, but railway traffic was considerably disorganised, and the 140 passengers on the train were greatly inconvenienced. The driver of the train was anticipating the possibility of slips occurring, and he was proceeding very slowly when the first few rocks came down. With a severe jolt the train came to a standstill with the engine and tender completely embedded in a great mass of soft earth and rocks. While the passengers were waiting for the relief train, large rocks continued to .fall from the walls of the gorge, but there was no panic. The locomotive was not derailed. It was hoped to have the line clear this morning, provided no further falls occur.
