Russell Town Board Holds Arbor Day

| [Special to “Northern Advqcatte’’] \ RUSSELL, '■>This Day. “We will be a little ahead of the day selected by the Government,” remarked Mr W. Cowper Anderson, chairman of the Russell Town Board at the July meeting, when a letter from the Department of Internal Affairs stated that Wednesday, August 2. had been selected as Arbor Day for 1939. “I fully believe in tree planting' 4 continued Mr Andei’son, “and I think the trees selected by the Town Board will be of immense value to the Kororareka Domain camping ground, but as they are due to arrive in the next day or so, I don’t think we can wait until August to plant them.” The trees selected by the Town Board for the purposes of shelter and beautifying in the camping grounds include silver birch, J.aponica, several species of cedar, idessa policapa, cryptomerio elegans and scarlet waratah, all varieties being fast growers. Street Lighting. A long discussion on the number of street and inter-section lights needed in Russell when electricity arrived, and the placing of them, took place, but no finality could be reached until costs of installation, maintenance and power used were obtained from the Bay. of Islands Power Board. These figures the board hopes to have by the next meeting. The town clerk, Mr A. H. Hitchcock, was instructed to ascertain the cost of installing a penny-in-the-slot meter for a power point placed in the domain motor camp cook house. Various improvements to roads and footpaths were approved.
