Plague Breaks Out On Jewish Refugee Ship
JERUSALEM, July 17. Plague has broken out in one of four ships carrying 250 Jewish refugees, which are lying off the Syrian coast after failing to penetrate the British cruiser patrol off the Palestine coast. Several victims died, and their bodies were thrown overboard from the ship, after which 650 passengers were allowed to enter Beirut in order to disinfect themselves and land patients under quarantine conditions. A second vessel, with 600 Jews aboard, mostly from Hamburg, has tried to enter 14 ports. The two others are carrying Austrians and Czechoslovakians. All four are short of food and water.
