Australia Eliminates Philippines
DAVIS CUP
NEW YORK, July 15
By winning the doubles game "today, tho Australian Davis Cup team eliminated the Philippines in the semifinal of the American zone. The Australians won the first two singles yesterday. Results are as follows: A. Quist (Australia) beat Sanchez (Philippines), 6—l, 6—2, 6—2. J. Bromwich (Australia) defeated Ampon (Philippines), B—6,8 —6, 9—7, 6—3. Doubles. —Bromwich and Quist defeated Ampon and Sanchez, 7 —5, 6—4, 6—2. Quist Easily. The Quist-Sanchez match took under an hour. Sanchez was obviously nervous throughout the first set, in which Quist was content mostly to remain on the baseline. Quist sallied to the net in the last stages and put away numerous overhand smashjesi. Sanchez’s forehand was particularly" unsteady.
In the third set, after Sanchez had taken a 2—o lead by breaking his opponent’s service in the first game and holding his own in the second, Quist put on pressure and drove Sanchez all over the court, to take six consecutive games. Bromwich Extended. Covering the court in retriever fashion, Ampon by most unbelievable saves forced Bromwich to extra games in two of the three sets before succumbing. There was never much doubt of the eventual outcome, but the Filipino’s stubborn resistance forced Bromwich to extend himself and won the gallery’s applause.
In the first set, Ampon took leads at 2—l, 3—l, 4—2, 5—3, 6—5, before Bromwich finally came to the net to smash out the remaining games. Fine service breaks, sensational baseline rallies and tricky drop-shots kept the crowd in an uproar. Ampon, with unerring lebs, beat Bromwich on numerous occasions.
Ampon tired rapidly in the third set and his shots became erratic. Bromwich took command at the net and won with little difficulty, although he also showed signs of fatigue. Ampon won three games. The Doubles Match. In spite of a severely-stubbed toe which caused him to limp, Quist was easily the best player in the doubles. Bromwich was erratic, apparently a reaction from yesterday’s long struggle with Ampon. The Filipinos fought courageously, but suffered due to poor overhead work. Quist’s overhead play was brilliant in the second set, but the Australians’ team work was patchy. Quist finally ran to set on his service after several deuces. The Australians had less difficulty in the third set, not due to any marked improvement in their play, but because the Filipinos lost touch and erred frequently.
