Australian Navy Discontent
(Received 11. a.m.) SYDNEY, July 16. Rumours of discontent among ratings in the Australian Navy are rife. The “Sunday Sun” reports that secret meetings of the crews of all the naval vessels now at Sydney are to be held at the week-end, to consider the undertaking given recently by the Minister of Defence, Mr G. A. Street, to investigate the rumours. Cause for complaints are said to be salaries in general, but particularly married men’s allowances, also the disbandment of the men’s welfare committees. Ratings were recently paraded and addressed by Senior officers. Mr Street, interviewed at Perth, said he had every confidence in the loyalty of the Fleet and in all members of the Squadron.
