Chances Of New Zealand Horses In Australia

New Zealand’s representatives have dene so well in Important races in Australia during the current season that one cannot help wondering whether the same success—or anything near it—will attend them during | the coming season. A Melbourne Cup, a Metropolitan, and several weight-for-age races in one season tend to justify Now Zealanders in the belief that their horses are superior to those of Australia. Defaulter or Royal Chief should add to the Dominion’s w.f.a. score next spring, and it is regrettable that Beaulivre is not engaged in the Derbys. Beau Vite is in the A.J.C. Derby, but he is not regarded as being up to the standard of Beaulivre. Apart from High Caste, Reading and Bonny Loch, there is nothing of special note among Sydney-trained Derby candidates. Perhaps New Zealand may produce another Epsom winner this year. New Zealand-bred horses have a good record in that race during the past ten years, winners being Nightmarch, Autopay, Silver Ring, Synagogue, Capris, and Gold Rod. There are good New Zealand sprinters engaged in the coming Epsom, but our representatives may do better in w.f.a races than in handicaps in the spring of next season.
