Council Property Sold. A special meeting of the Whangarei County Council yesterday morning decided to authorise the sale of property adjoining the old County Council Chambers in Bank Street to Mr C. Schon, who had previously purchased council property extending to the corner of Vine Street.
Holidays and Contracts. The provisions of the Holidays With Pay Bill do not affect any work carried out by contract. Consequently, the Hokianga Harbour Board, which carries out all work by contract, will not be responsible for holiday pay. The position was made clear in a letter received by the board from the New Zealand Harbours’ Association.
Moehau Jetty. No objection to the erection of a jetty in the vicinity of the Moehau Native School being erected by the Education Department will be raised by the Hokianga Harbour Board, provided it is not called upon to contribute to or be responsible for its maintenance. This information has been forwarded to the Marine Department by the secretary of the Hokianga Harbour Board, Mr H. Chappell.
Car Overturns
To feel his car being turned around, and then fall on its side, was the unpleasant experience which befel Mr E. V. Meiklejohn, of Park Avenue, at about 8 o’clock last evening. The car had been struck in the rear by another, and larger, vehicle, and was considerably damaged as the result. Fortunately, Mr Meiklejohn was alone at the time. He received a rather severe t knock on the head, but. apart from j shock, was not injured to any extent, j After seeing that this was the case, the \ other motorist continued on his way. | It is understood he comes from near j Auckland, ?
The Northern coalminers have agreed to work under the new award, which becomes operative in Queensland next week, and in New South Wales on August 16. The threat of direct action has been withdrawn.
Resolutions iOf Condolence,
Resolutions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr C. J. C. Powell, brother of Cr. Powell, and the late Mr R. Mitchell, an employee of the council, .were passed by the Whangarei County Council at the monthly meeting yesterday, members standing in silence.
Agriculture in Queensland. Some interesting photos showing the large scale upon which harvesting is carried out in Australia have been received by Mrs F. M. Commins, of Parua Bay Road, from her son, Mr John Commins, who is contracting in the Darling Downs district in Queensland. The extent to which ploughing is necessary in order to prepare the ground for sowing wheat, etc., is illustrated by one photo, whicfi shows a 42furrow plough being hauled by a caterpillar tractor.
Centennial Work Appreciated. Although Mr F. Tattersfield, of the staff of the Whangarei branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred on promotion to Wellington, his departure from this centre has been delayed for a fortnight at the request of the Mayor, Mr W. Jones. Mr Jones, who is chairman of the Northland Centennial organisation, wrote to the head office of the bank, pointing out that Mr Tattersfield was doing excellent work in hfs capacity of chairman to the Combined Services and Professional Queen in the Whangarei Centennial Queen Carnival, and requesting that he should be permitted
to continue this work. The request has been acceded to.
