Awatea’s Master Challenged By Workers
j [Per Press Association. Copyright .] j WELLINGTON, This Day. ( The New Zealand Federation of j Labour has passed a motion protesting ■ against a statement alleged to have been made by Captain A. H. Davey, i master of the liner Awatea, to the effect that “nobody was working in , this blasted country.”
The federation requests an apology to workers, failing which, it is stated, workers affiliated to the organisation will take such action as may be deemed necessary to compel a cessation ot unwarranted attacks on workers. Captain Davey is away from New Zealand at the moment, but, before leaving on his trip to Sydney this
week, he is stated to have denied responsibility for the statement attributed to him.
The general manager of the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., Mr J. N. Greenland, said last night it appeared clear that Captain Davey had been discussing the trouble caused by stowaways bn his vessel, and his remarks had been directed against them, not against workers.
