Whangarei Cycling Club Performances
(By PEDALLER). After a short spell in racing activities, due to several of the officials being ■ actively engaged in the affairs of the Winter Exhibition, the Whangarei Cycle , Racing Club re-com-menced its programme last Saturday, when an 18 mile event was staged.. As is usually noticed after a spell the field was small. .
Athol Young, to ride into first place, gave a great performance, and.it is,obvious that the handicapper does not yet know of what he is capable. Over the same course he received a handicap of' seven minutes at the commencement of the season and) on Saturday he won comfortably from three minutes. This is certainly an achievement to be proud of. Hec. McMasters rode a splendid race to gain second place but lacks that finishing sprint as yet. Jack Byers found the going too solid to bridge the gap, riding on his own. The heavy head wind on the run told on him, but he rode well to get the time honours and third) place. Interesting Finishes.
Sid. Mogford is gaining form and rode a better race on Saturday, and It will not be long before he will hold his own with most riders. Bill. Buckley is riding well and some interesting finishes are expected between the scratch, riders in the near future. Ivan Mears and Bruce MacKenzie have not put in an appearance for a, race or two and the return of these two lads is eagerly awaited. Ivan Viskovich rode a creditable race to win the 20 mile event in fine style On June 17 and he will be keenly watched. Bert MacKenzie is riding from, a back mark and is making his presence felt. Colin Bradley will be back in harness next Saturday and from his showing in his first start will be well in the running for some of the “new riders’ ” trophies. The points trophy is creating a great deal of interest and it is any-body’s yet, the points being very even. The points honours for. the all round road championship have again changed hands. J. Byers now leads W. Buckley by eight points to seven, the next three competitors’having two points each.
Whangarei Hockey
Executive Meets
Mr N. S. Franklin, vice-president, presided at a meeting of the Whangarei Hockey Association on Wednesday evening, in the absence of the president, Mr S. Oldcorn. Reports were received from the managers of the various teams which participated in the Country Week tournament in Auckland. All reports were of a highly satisfactory nature-, and the executive congratulated the players on the fine performances they had given. Special reference was made to the Whangarei ladies “A” representatives, who won the Twiname Cup for the runners-up in the ladies' provincial tournament, also for retaining the Girlie Lowe Cup in their annual match against the Plako ladies’ representatives. The Whangarei “A" men representatives were also congratulated on winning the Kent Cup in their annual match with the Piako men representatives. A letter was received from the Auckland Ladies’ Hockey Association stating that it is proposed to enter an Auckland provincial team in the New Zealand provincial tournament, which will be held towards the end of August. Members of the Whangarei ladies’ teams are eligbile for selection, and it was decided to approve of the action of the Auckland association. ! It was also decided to give sole control of Kensington Park to the Centennial Queen Carnival Committee for next Saturday, conditionally that hockey players are admitted free, but that all spectators to the hockey matches, which .are played in one portion of the ground, be charged admission. Owing to the fact that the championship competitions of the ladies’ “A” and men’s “B” teams will, in the normal course of events, be completed by the end of July, which is approximately one month before the remainder of the competitions terminate, it was decided to play an extra competition of one round for those two grades. Mr N. S. Franklin has kindly donated a cup for the ladies’ competition. It was decided to recommend to the Umpires’ Association that its members tighten up on the rules in order to promote 'a better standard of hockey in certain cases.
