My thanks are due to Mr Vincent | for his courteous explanation. I had ] a special reason for writing, and it j
may be interesting j to state it. At Spal-] ding, Yorkshire, there] lived a man named ]
PREDICTIONS RECALLED.
John Smith. He ws a baorn astrnoo-] mer, na adlways studying the stars. I Eventually he remveod to Middles- j borough, and published an alminack. I knew Mr Smith, and he explained several things to me that were useful. One was that when the wind backe dfrom the sun, even if there wer en olcodsu, I wsa to prepare fo rrain. This was important in haytime, and I always had hay cocked upj when possible. The rain more or less' came, and this piece of information' saved a lot of labour turning wet hay.! We always too kSmith’s Almanack' as long as he lived. On one occasion ■ he said in his almanack: The indica-! tions are that a brutal murder will be committed in Ireland, and gave the approximate date. Sure enough that was the time Lord Frederick Cavendish and Mr Burke were murdered in Phoenix Park,‘Dublin. The following year his almanack said: ‘Tf I can read the stars aright something will be found out about the Phoenix Park i mui ders, and the date he mentioned was the day the murderers were sentenced. How this was done I have not the slightest idea. I can guarantee both statements, for T read them myseIf.—WILLIAM WAKE.
