Marram Grass Planting On Northland West Coast

One of the Public Works Department’s most important undertakings in Northland during the winter months is the fixation of sand dunes on the west coast by planting marram grass. Until a few years ago, large areas of fertile farm land were being menaced by drifting sand, but now the more dangerous areas have been consolidated with extensive marram grass plantations, followed by lupins. Offering as it does ideal work during the wet winter months, which also afford the best time for planting, the scheme is being continued by the Department each year, and this winter activities were commenced about a month ago, mainly along Ninety Mile Beach.
