West Coast Coal Supplies Improved
[Special to “Northern Advocate”] WELLINGTON, This Day. No serious shortage of household coal is anticipated, and with reasonably good weather to enable the shipping of gas-producing coal from the West Coast, any leeway should be made up, stated the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, yesterday, following a conference with representatives of the Coal Owners’ Federation and the Mine Workers’ Federation. Mr Webb said that the situation nationally with, regard to household coal had improved. The coal companies felt confident that they would be able to supply enough coal to meet all requirements. Much of the delay in sending forward supplies had been caused through an influenza epidemic, and .also by the bad shipping facilities at Greymouth and Westport, ’where the weather had affected the working capacity of the ports. Mr Webb said that the question of housing accommodation for miners was also discussed. The matter would be looked into by the companies affected.
