Town Board to Assist With Motor Gamp Improvements

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”l KAITAIA, This Day

A DEPUTATION REPRESENTING THE A. AND P. ASSOCIATION AND THE KAITAIA BUSINESSMEN’S ASSOCIATION WAITED ON THE KAITAIA TOWN BOARD AT ITS MEETING ON MONDAY EVENING AND ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE IN HAVING THE WATER LAID ON TO THE MOTOR CAMP IN THE A. AND P. GROUNDS. Mr J. W. Hcskin, president of the A. and P. Association, said it was proposed to spend a fairly large amount in improving the camp, which, when completed, would be a great asset to the town. The intention was to erect a fairly large building with all conveniences including’ sinks, two shower baths, three lavatories for ladies and three for men. The water was absolutely essential. In the past tanks had sometimes gone dry and tourists, for want of water, had to leave the grounds. The laying on of the water was quite beyond the financial resources of the bodies they represented.

► Mr A. G. Horsley, representing the Businessmen’s Association, said his association and the A. and P. Association had set up a committee of three representatives from each body to control the camp and, after the first improvements had been made, any revenue from the camp would bo spent on further improvements.

Advantage to Patrons Mr R. Stewart said the work proposed would not only be of advantage to visitors, but to the people of the district. With the camp brought up-to-date all sports bodies would benefit. Footballers would have the use of the shower baths and a supply of water would be an advantage when A. and P. shows were held. A better camp would bring Kaitaia into greater prominence and would serve as an advertising medium. Mr Taaffe: How many chains of piping would be necessary? Mr Hoskin: The old dairy factory offices were connected and the water would have to be taken from there. It was proposed to have it laid on to the hall also. The time was coming when they would be holding a twoday show at Kaitaia and a supply of yater would then be necessary for stock. i

Immediate Expenditure

Mr Taaffe: What amount do you propose to spend on the grounds?

Mr Hoskin: At present about £IOO, and we are going to start the work very shortly. The building is to be 30 feet by 15 feet, and as much of the work as possible will be done by those who will give their services free.

Free Pipes Offered

Mr Taaffe: We have some pipes formerly, used for suisplying the hospital wilh water, and members of the board are all agreeable- that these should be given to your committee free. There are ftom 12 to 15 chains of piping to be done and the pipes we are offering are worth at least 6d per foot.

“I understand that the committee is asking for free water as’well, but the board could be approached .about that later when the committee knows its position better.” Mr Stewort: What we are concerned about at present is the laying on of the water.

“The board is in a better position to lay the pipes than the committee. The grounds are used by the people and though we are not asking for charity we want the maximum we can get.

Work Under Scheme 13 Mr McKinnon: The matter is the most important that has qome before the board since the installation of the water supply. The A. and P. grounds are the only sports ‘grounds in the town, and the association has been rated for the grounds for many years. The board could not only let the committee have pipes but undertake the laying of the pipes under No. 13 Scheme, which would mean a cost to the board of only 4d per hour for each man. He would move that provided the necessary authority can bo obtained, the foreman be instructed to proceed with the work under Scheme 13. The motion was seconded by Mr Archibald. Mr Mclntosh said he agreed with the proposals for improving the camping site. He had been working opposite the A. and P. grounds and knew something of the disabilities of campers. Mr Hoskin said the A. and P. association had received a letter from the Health Officer in which lie was insisting on a lot of improvements to the hall and the water would bo of considerable assistance in carrying those out. What was required would cost the association a'good deal and as the revenue from the hall only about met expenses they were faced with the necessity of getting some outside assistance or closing the hall altogether. The motion was carried.
