RACING NEWS

Preparing- For Spring. Master Hotspur has started off with light sprinting tasks, to fit him for spring racing. The Ringmaster colt is developing into a commandinglooking colt, and has built up nicely since last raced.

A Good Purchase. The Iliad colt secured by M. Conza at Trentham last week appeared to be good buying at 180 guineas. He comes from the same family as Beau Vitc, Palestrina and Wotan, and is a well-built youngster showing plenty of quality.

Looks Well. Sovereign Lady, who has not raced since the midsummer meeting at Riccarton in February, has rejoined H. R. Davies's team. Though in work for o long time, this six-year-old Winning Hit mare was lightly raced, starting six times for one win, one second, and one third. Her victory was in the Riccarton Handicap last November, but her good effort in being runner-up to Padishah in the Metropolitan Handicap helped considerably in bringing her earnings to £4§s. Sovereign Lady stayed on well in the Metropolitan, and may be given a preparation for the next New Zealand Cup.

A Sensational Tussle, The recent death of the well-known former jockey, J. Beale, calls to mind one of the most sensational classic races run in the Dominion. This was the Avondale Guineas of 1926, held at Ellerslie on account of the Avondale track being transformed. Speculation' was rife as to who was the better three-year-old. Commendation or Lysander. Beale was on the former and L. A. Pine on Lysander. It was a great duel between the pair all the way up the straight, and finally they deadheated, their time, 1.37. being the then fastest time for the Ellerslie mile. It was such a terrific struggle that both horses were distressed after the clash, and Lysander was never quite so good afterwards.
