Whangarei Hockey Enthusiasts Have Enjoyable Afternoon

rpuE WEATHER WAS IDEAL ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. S/\ HEN THE 1 COMPETITIONS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE WHANGAREI HOCKEY ASSOCIATION WERE RE SUMED, THE GROUNDS, DESPITE THE HEAVY RAIN OF THE WEEK, BEING IN GOOD ORDER. THIS WAS PARTICULARLY NOTICEABLE AT KENSINGTON PARK AND THE HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDS. In the match between the two leading teams in the men’s senior A section Mangapai created something of a surprise by beating Springfield by the large margin of eight goals to two. Ramblers also had a comfortable win over Kara by six goals to two, but the losers, who played throughout with only nine men put up a splend id showing, Hora Hora A defeated Whatitiri 5—2 in the ladies’ A grade, while Old Girls seniors 4 beat Old Girls 0.

MEN’S A Kara Loses With Two Men Short Playing two men short, Kara was defeated by Ramblers 6 —2, after a fast open game, the Kara ground being in good order. In the first spell Kara did extremely well to hold their opponents to a 2 —l score. A. Sloane scored both goals for Ramblers, while R. Attwood scored for Kara. It was only towards the end of the game that the Kara team, tiring .after the strenuous demand on their energies, were beaten. H. Spehr scored Kara’s second goal. A. Sloane obtained his third goal for Ramblers, the other scores being achieved by N. Johnson (2) and P. Munro 1. The Kara backs played a fine game throughout and it was in this department that the team played the two men short. * Mr J. R. Johnson was referee. United And ’Karamea On Even Terms After a good clean sharp game United and Maungakaramea could not decide the winner, and finished up with the score four all. It appeared in the first half as though ’Karamea would have a win as they finished the spell with the score 3—l in. their favour. However United rallied and did exactly the same in the second spell as their opponents did in the first half. For United, goals were scored by Hannam, Fresswood, L. Salmon and Massey, while F. Bint and Wenzlick each scored two for Maungakaramea. The referees were Messrs Campbell and Ashcroft. MEN’S B Hukerenui Just Win From One Tree Point Hukerenui continued to show improved form at Kensington Park, when they defeated One Tree Point by 3 goals to 2, after a good encounter of open play. M. Prouse (2) and A. Prouse (1) netted the ball for the winners, while N. Challenger and G. Windley each scored for One Tree Point, Messrs Campbell and Ashcroft refereed, . ' ■ '

Maungatapere Just Beat Bargain Stores Another even encounter at Kensington Park was between Maungatapere and - Bargain Stores, the former just winning by 2 goals to 1 after some exciting play. For Maungatapere, M. Jenkin scored both goals and Fleming obtained Bargain Stores’ goal. Messrs Monk and King refereed, Otaika Beats j Kara One of the few grounds to be in poor order was at Otaika, where the wet weather had made conditions bad, and the playing of good hockey very difficult. The home team defeated Kara by the odd goal, and that just about indicates the difference between the two teams. For Otaika, goals were scored by J. Kerr and C. Foster, while P. Snelgar scored for Kara. Mr F. L. Izod was referee. LADIES’ A , Old Girls Seniors Superior A substantial win by 4 goals to nil was registered by Old Girls Seniors over Old Girls, This win is all the more meritorious as the Seniors played two short throughout. The game was a very open one, and the win was achieved largely because of the ability of the Seniors to make long passing phots necessary because of their two absentees. However, Old Girls played some good hockey and only their poor shooting after good play, prevented them from scoring. For the winners, goals were registered by Miss P. Alison (3), Miss J. Hannam (1), Messrs R. Nixey and H. Presswood were referees, LADIES’ B Hikurangi And Hora Hora Play Drawn Game After a very fast and open game from start to finish, Hikurangi A and Hora Hora B played a drawn game 3—3. Hora Hora was unfortunate to lose Miss D. Anderson in the firsthalf, when she received a nasty knock on the hand and retired. She was not replaced. For Hikurangi, goals were scored by R. Smith (2) and L. Pohi (1), while for Hora Hora, the scorers were N. Hutchins, D, Anderson and E. Pitman. The referees were N. Munro and R. Nixey, Bargain Stores On Top | Of Maungakaramea Giving a really first-class exhibition of the game, Bargain Stores played well to defeat Maungakaramea by 6 goals to nil. The forward combination of the winners dominated the play. Practically all the goals were the result of definite superiority in that department of the game, while Miss Riddle, at half, gave an excellent demonstration. Goals were scored by F. Hutton, K. Crispin, R. Collier, R. Dobson and E. Dudding (2). Mr N. Munro was referee. Hikurangi And School A Draw Even play was the feature of the junior game at Kensington Park, the game resulting "2 —2. For School, goals were scored by R. Fox and G. McKenzie. D. Pickles and H. Coutts scored for Hikurangi. Messrs Monk and King refereed. School C Too Good For School B The scoring ability of K. Rogers proved superior to the School B defence when School C won by 3 goals to nil, Rogers netting the three. Mr Oldcorn refereed.
