Kiln-Dried Rimu For State Houses

[Per Press Association. Copyright .] GREYMOUTH, Saturday.

Advice was received yesterday by the West Coast Sawmillers’ Association that the use of dressing A grade rimu timber in State housing, authorised this week by the Cabinet, to assist the balanced consumption of the output of West Coast mills is to be restricted to kiln-dried timber.

Mr J. W. Callwcll, chairman of the association, stated that the millers were disappointed that the use of dressing A rimu was restricted to kilndried, in view of the often recorded experience as to the durable properties of this class of timber when airdried in Canterbury. Although arrangements will be made for kiln-drying by the present owners of kilns, there will be considerable delay in getting the benefit from the concession. It is far from certain that some curtailment in working hours will not be necessary. '
