British Open Golf Champs. Start

(Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 4. One hundred and twenty-nine players scoring 156 or less qualified for the British open golf championship, over 72 holes, at St. Andrews. Henry Cotton, with a round of 69, j equalled the record performances of Lawson Little, James Brewin and P. Allies in the first round. This enabled him to share the lead with Little, the American requiring 73 for his second round, the' aggregate of the pair being 142. Australian Qualifies. The Australian player, J. Ballitu, qualified with an aggregate of 146, but D. C. Collins, the New Zealand entrant, failed. He took 84 in his | second round, givving him an 'aggre- i gate of 162. I He played in heavy rain on a sodden course and was bunkered many times, in addition to three-putting frequently. After a round today and another tomorrow, the competitors will be reduced to 40. This number, only, will take part in the final two rounds on Friday, the winner being the player with the best aggregate over tht 72 holes.

Last year, A. R. Whitcombe was the winner, with an aggregate of 295. James Adams was runner-up, two strokes away, and Henry Cotton, the winner in 1934 and 1937, in the third place with.29B. These were the only three competitors to break 300,
