Special Decorations For Centennial

February 17 to March 27, 1940, has been fixed as the period of intensive celebrations of the Centennial in Whangarei district. At last night’s meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council a letter was received from the District Centennial Committee conveying the suggestion from the Pageantry Sub-Committee that the council be asked to consider the illumination and decoration of the business area for this period, with special featuring of outstanding landmarks, such as Central Park, by lighting and other effects. June, 1940, would also be a period of celebration in connection with the Northland Centennial Winter Exhibition at Whangarei, at which it was hoped that the Northland Court from the Centennial Exhibition, Wellington, would be featured. The committee suggested that the council might request business houses to arrange for the illumination and decoration of their premises during this period also. The council decided to accede to the request, .and the electrical engineer, Mr W. J. Dawson, is to be asked to prepare plans for the lighting of streets and main points of interest, while the borough engineer, Mr I. A. Cromie, is to bring forward suggestions for street decoration for the period of the celebrations.
