AH Or None Should Aid In N.Z's Defence
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] KAWAKAWA, This Day.
‘Tho only fair and equitable way to guarantee defence and recruits is to have compulsory conscription, and I would move that we reply to that effect."
This statement was made by the chairman of the Bay County Council, Mr H. T. Atkinson, at Tuesday’s meeting of the council, when a letter appealing to the council to assist in securing Kawakawa recruits for the Northland Regiment was received from Captain J. V. M. Cauty.
“So far as I can see, the recruits are coming from i-eturned soldiers, and not the young men,” Mr Atkinson said. “Those prepared to do the job are coming forward, and the slackers are sitting back. “All or None.” “I believe in all or none,” he said. Cr. W. T. Bates stated that there were a number of people who did not think that such steps were necessary. “The majority of the people in England thought the same prior to 1914,” Mr Atkinson said, “but they learned a tragic lesson. “If we are strong, there will be no war.”
Cr. Bates: I don’t know any country which wants to attack us.
The chairman’s motion supporting conscription was then put to , the meeting, and carried.
