The Formal Opening
[Per Press Association. Copyright .l WELLINGTON, This Day The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M, J. Savage, was unable to be present at the opening of the first session of the 26th Parliament of New Zealand today.
He is suffering from a slight attack of influenza, but expects to be about again in a few days. The session, which rharks the beginnings of the second term of office of the Labour Government, was opened by Commission. The commissioners were the Speaker of the Legislative Council, the Hon. Sir Walter Carncross, the Leader of the Council, the Mon. Mark Fagan, the Hon. WPerry, of Wfellington, the Hon. T. Doyle, of Southland, and the Hon. J. Alexander, of Auckland. The members of the Commission took their seats in the Legislative Council at 2.30 p.m., 'and the Chief Commissioner, Sir Walter Carncross, addressed the Legislative Councillors as follows:
“Honourable Legislative Councillors, I have to acquaint the council that His Excellency the Governor-Genexal, not thinking fit to be personally present here this day, has been pleased to cause !a Commission to be issued in order to enable the opening and holding of the first session of the 26th Parliament of New Zealand. In The House.
On the members of the House assembling, the Chief Commissiorjc announced that His Excellency had been pleased to cause a Commission to be issued to open the session. After the Letters Patent had been read, fhe Commissioner informed the assembled legislators that His Excellency the Governor-General would address them tomorrow and declare to them in person the cause of his calling this meeting of Parliament together. Since it was necessary that the Speaker of the House of Representatives should first be chosen, His Excellncy requested that members of the House should make choice of a fit and proper person to fill that high and important office, and that, having chosen him, the House should present him at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Government House for His Excellency’s approval. Members of the House of Representatives returned to their own Cham-
ber, 'and were sworn in. The Speaker Re-elected. They then proceeded with the election of the Speaker, the Hon. W. E. Barnard being again appointed.
