Gales And Storms Affect Tasman Shipping
(Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.
Gales and storms in the Tasman have been encountered by the Awatea, which has been delayed aoout an hour, and the Wanganella, which will arrive about five hours late.
Grave fears are held for the safety of V. Carmody (38) and Edward Butler (35), who left Newcastle in a launch for a morning’s fishing and failed to return last night. A westerly gale was blowing off the coast all day.
After the worst storm she has encountered in Australian waters since entering the trade in 1925, the liner Oransay reached Fremantle with many visible signs of the severe buffeting she received in the Great Australian Bight. Ventildf..ors were stripped from the forecastle head, railings twisted, and the forepeak flooded. Parts of the crew’s quarters were awash.
