Railway Construction. Although difficulties have been met with en route, the work on the Wesc-port-Inangahua Junction railway is progressing very satisfactorily. Four bridges, of a total length of 1870 feet, are finished; four others, of a total length of 1240 feet, are under construction, and four more remain. It is anticipated that the laying of the rails will be started within a very short time, and will proceed continuously until the line is completed.

Powerful Model Locomotives, Built entirely from scrap metal, two exceptionally powerful model electric locomotives are to be- seen in the model railway section at the Winter Exhibition. Powered with an electric motor driven by a six-volt battery, one engine is capable of hauling six children, while the other, which derives its power from a motor-cycle engine, can pull a load of six adults.

Carnival Queen Election. The Combined Banks and Professional Queen in the Whangarei Centennial Queen Carnival is’to be elected by popular vote at a benefit entertainment at the Regent Theatre tomorrow night. Tickets for this function have sold freely, and bear a special voting slip without which votes cannot be recorded. As ordinary box office passes do not entitle the holder to a vote, patrons who have not already procured tickets are requested to ask at the box office for voting tickets, which cost no more.

With 2016 votes, Miss Nola Creelman has taken the lead in the competition for the selection of the Combined Service and Professional Queen in the Whangarei Centennial Queen Carnival. Junior Chamber to Discuss Defence.

At the next meeting of the Whangarei Junior Chamber of Commerce, the subject of “Defence’’ is to be introduced by Mr H. C. Hemphill. Defence problems and the possibilities of invasion are to be discussed. Already members of the Junior Chamber have realised the need for preparedness, and some are how in training with the New Zealand Machanised Regiment.

Model of Dominion Monarch. A handsome addition to the model section at the Winter Exhibition this year is the scale model of the Dominion Monarch; which made its maiden voyage from England to Australia, via South Africa, a few months ago. This model, which is lent by the Shaw, Savill & Albion Company, Ltd., owners of the vessel, is Bft. in length, and cost between £3OOO and £4OOO to construct. After the Exhibition, this fine work of tart will be on view at the new premises in Vine Street, of Dalgety £ Company, Ltd., agents for the company in Northland.

A Royal Message. The Governor-General, Lord Galway, has received from the King the following reply to a message recently sent to His Majesty: “The Queen and I are greatly touched by the kind terms of the message which you have sent to us in the name of the Government and people of New Zealand on our return from our voyage to North America. Please express to them, our grateful thanks, and assure them how happy wo should be if we were able to pay another visit to their country, whose loyal and hospitable welcome we have never forgotten.”
