Judge Praises Women’s Institute Display
The high standard of work in the Women’s Institute section of the Whangarei Winter Exhibition was praised by the judge, Mrs R. Mayhead, of Waiuku.
The thrift articles were particularly inetresting, Mrs Mayhead considered, much ingenuity being shown in the use of such wteste materials as old Silk stockings, sugar-bags, flour-bags, and inner motor tubes.:
One particularly useful inner tube article which caught the judge’s eye was a foot muff for use when travelling by car or train. Round in shape, this was lined with odd pieces of fur, and had 'a special appeal at this time of the year.
Silk Stockings and Felt.
Silk stocking rugs were really beautiful, Mrs Mayhead said, while a rug made from old felt hats was a striking and worthwhile piece of thrift work.
Another exhibit made from the same material was a cushion in the form of a flower, many small pieces of varicoloured felt composing the petals.
Probably the most useful of all the thrift articles was a waterproof cape made from flour-bags, together with a pair of hip-length leggings from similar material.
Soft toys were in many instances of excellent workmanship and finish, one very attractive little dog being made from cured sheep-skin.
Arts and Crafts
Arts and crafts formed 'an interesting section, many fine pieces of work being displayed, with gaod examples of cross-stitch and wool tapestry.
One attractive exhibit of modern handicraft was a blue felt bag, trimmed with hollyhocks and foxgloves in pink felt. One of the oldest handicrafts was represented in home-spun and homedyed wools.
Collectively, Mrs Mayhead thought, the section constituted an excellent display, doing much to illustrate the varied class of work being undertaken by Institute members.
