Great Headmaster’s Exhortations

Apropos of dip reunion of lb:' Whangarei High School Old Pupils’ Association, the following exhortation, written by the late Roger Lupton on the eve of his re: irc-ment on May 31. 1924, makes eloquent appeal:

‘Fear God, Honour the King.’ I and hundreds of others, have found this a sura and certain guide of life.

‘•These trite words contain much more than appears on the surface

of them

'‘The first exhortation deals entirely wi.h your spiritual natures, and has an immediate concern with life hereafter. Let me toll you, none can afford to neglect their spiritual growth. If they do, they will surely grow vo be lop-sided men or women.

“The second exhortation certainly means giving honour and reverence to His Majesty the King, but it also means being a lojml citizen in our great Empire. “It means doing your best to see that able and upright men and women arc elected to make oinlaws, and so in the smaller way helping to obtain efficient, straight men as representatives in your borough council and local bodies. “I am sure if you follow these precepts you will prove to be worthy citizens of our great Empire, and you will bring honour and, perhaps, renown, to your old school.”
