900 Men Affected Temporary Hold-Up at Devonport Naval Base
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day. A RESULT OF DISSATISFACTION CONCERNING RATES OF PAY, AND THE FACT THAT THE SOCIAL SECURITYY PAYMENTS ARE BEING DEDUCTED FROM THEIR PAY, TROUBLE DEVELOPED AT THE DEVONPORT NAVAL BASE THIS MORNING. Officers decline to give any information, but it is learned that 900 men are affected. It is reported unofficially that no work fs being done. The men state that tins is the only navy in the world where social security charges arc deducted from the men’s pay. The men returned to work .a few minutes after the luncheon interval had ended. They are requesting an increase of 3/- per day in pay for all ratings. If no reply is received within a-week, they intend to hold another meeting. ; . , ■:
