Japanese Blockade Becomes Graver; Tense State in Concessions
(Received 1.0 p.m.) LONDON, June 17. X HE DOMEI NEWS AGENCY AT TOKIO STATES THAT JAPAN’S POLICY REGARDING TIENTSIN WILL NOT BE ALTERED. THE GOVERNMENT IS WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORTING THE MEASURES TAKEN locally. Since Britain cannot very well withdraw from China, this agency states, both British and Japanese authorities at Tientsin are likely to maintain their present ground unless an unexpected incident happens.
Serious Incident at Shanghai
Chinese police, under orders from the Japanese, entered the International Settlement at Shanghai, and tried to reopen a police station which the British closed down three months ago.
British troops found the Chinese removing the barbed-wire barricades around the station, and the Chinese were forced to withdraw, after which the barricades were replaced. After the departure of the troops, however, the Chinese returned with revolvers drawn and posted a guard opposite the station. British sentries were posted and remained at the station throughout the night. There was no further disturbance in the area, and the Japanese are attempting to minimise the incident
