Weather Upsets Bay Standard
[Special to “Northern Advocate "J ! KAIKOHE, This Day. I Owing to the showery weather conditions. the senior games played in the Bay of Islands on Saturday failed to impress. The players lacked com-
bination, and the forwards, who had the ball practically to themselves in j all the contests, failed to make use of it. j Results are as follows: i
Senior: Motatau 21. Kaikohe 8; Chaeawai 8. Kawakawa 3; Otiria 23, Ruataniwha 0. Junior: Okaihau 8, Chaeawai G; 1 Kaikohe A 17, Oromahoe 3.
MGTATAITS SUPERIORITY. From the commencement of play it was clear that 'Motatau possessed the best team tor the conditions. Favoured by the wind Motatau immediately pressed into Kaikohe’s territory, and several unsuccessful attempts were made to score with penalty kick?-, but the ball was too greasy.
Kaikohe rallied, and forced Motatau back, but Joe Kingi, who was the most outstanding player on the field, secured the ball after if had been beautifully passed along the Motatau back line, and. raced over to secure the opening points. Immediately after the kick off, Kingi again obtained possession and secured his second try. This happened a third time shortly afterwards, when ho dived over in a handy position. Tungaroa missed an easy kick. Shortly before half-time D. Webster attempted to take the ball, but it bounced oft’ his chest and J. Wilson, who was following up fast, c.aught it raced on to score, and half-time came
with the score 12 —0, in Motatau's fav-
Kaikohe was unfortunate ih having to fight against a strong wind throughout the first spell, and when the second half commenced the wind had dropped.
King! again kept the score and the Kaikohe team on the move, when he gained possession from a line-out and
literally forced his way over to score his fourth try for the day. Kaikohe rallied, and with a rush drove Motatau into its own territory, where D. Webster intercepted a pass and raced on to score behind the posts. W, Skipper converted. Flay remained in Motatau's section of the field for some time, until Skipper took a penalty practically on the side-line and goaled. It was a fine
kick. Play was fairly even for the next few minutes, and just on time Keogh obtained .another try for Mota-
tau and converted the kick, to make the final score: Motatan 21. Kaikohe 8. POOR EXHIBITION. The Ohaeawai-Kawakawa game was a poor exhibition of Rugby. It was neither one thing or the other, as the forwards failed to use the conditions to advantage, and the backs, when they obtained possession, endeavoured to kick in-field.
Ohaeawai’s points cdme from two scores and a conversion, while Kawakaw.a's three points were secured by David. CTIEIA’S COMBINATION. Gtiria deserved the victory it obtained over Ruataniwha, as both the forwards and the backs worked well together, and several combinations were used to .advantage.
The game was a forward tussle throughout most of the two spells, but when the Otiria backs received possession they knew what to do.
Scorers for Otiria were (Sherrington (2), M. Wiki (2). J. Wharerau, D. Utuaonga and T. Keogh. One try was converted, the final score being 23—0. in favour of Otiria.
