Government Wins By-Election

The result of the by-election on Saturday for the Christchurch South seat, rendered vacant by the death of Mr E. J. Howard, was as follows: — R. M, Macfarlane (G.) .. 7492 M. E. Lyons (N.) 3779 Majority for Macfarlane 3713
In addition, there were 314 postal votes and 232 absentee votes, which have not yet been counted.
A total of 15,590 names were on the roll for the by-election, while 11.271 votes were recorded, not including postal and absentee votes, a poll of approximately 70 per cent, resulting.
The voting at the general election last year was as follows: —
E. J. Howard (G.) 9885 Gladstone Ward (N.) .. 3890 Majority for Howard ... 5995
There were then 15,140 electors on the roll, 13,775 votes being cast. Mr Macfarlane thus received 2393 votes fewer than did Mr Howard, while Mr Lyons’ total was only 111 lower than that obtained by Mr Ward.
