Where Australians “Don’t Draw Much Water”
Forty-five years ago anyone could get a job in the Northern Wairoa timber-milling industry, provided he was not an Australian, said Captain G. B. Bates, speaking at the Rugby dinner at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday night. At that time he had sailed up the river on a 450-ton boat to load logs for South Africa, and before leaving had a notice inserted in the “Wairoa Bell."
“Two Australians passed through Dargaville today; nothing missing." When captain of the Wanganella, he had called at the Bay of Islands recently, and had been asked by a local resident, paying an official calk "Arc you an Australian?" Before he could reply the small daughter of the Russell resident had intervened: “Don’t insult the gentleman, daddy !"
“So," Captain Bates said, laughing, “Australians don’t draw much water in the Bay of Islands cither.".
James Ferrier beat A. H. Colledge by 7 and 5 in. the final of the Queensland amateur golf championship.
