Steel Shortage Holds Up S. I. Main Trunk
I Per Press Association. Copyright .] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Delay in the delivery of steel for the Clarence River bridge is holding up progress on the northern section of tiie South Island Main Trunk railway.
The steel superstructure of the bridge is being constructed in 13 spans, and weighs approximately 10Off tons. The contract for the fabrication of the steel was let to the Railways Department several months ago, and it was anticipated that no difficulty would be encountered in handling the work. Fabrication- is being carried out at the railway workshops in Wellington, and inquiries as to the cause of the delay will be made by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, who learned on Saturday that it would be several months yet before the steel would be available. In other respects, good progress has been made on the northern section of the line.
