Mr. C. H. White, for many years assistant town clerk of Wanganui, has been appointed town clerk. Captain Murdoch Stuart returned to his home in Mill Road this week after undergoing a slight surgical operation in Auckland. He has made a splendid recovery.
Mr R. V. Kay, new resident officer of the State Advances Corporation, arrived in Whangarei yesterday from Wellington. Mr Kay replaces Mr F. W. Sullivan, who has been transferred back to the head office of the corporation, and who leaves to take up his new duties at the end of next week.
The death has occurred of Miss Christina Robina Duncan, aged 95, the oldest resident of Foxton. Miss Duncan was a daughter of a pioneer missionary, the first Presbyterian Minister on this coast, the Rev James. Duncan. Miss Duncan wrote a number of poems some of which were published. She lived all her life in Foxton on a property acquired by her father.
King Leopold has invited Their Majesties to visit Belgium from October 24 to October 28, including an inspection of the International Water Exhibition at Liege. It is suggested that Their Majesties travel by canal on the Admiralty’s yacht Enchantress.
The Pope has appointed the first two negro bishops. Monseigneur Ignazio Romaro Sandratanao, belonging to thd Malgascia tribe, becomes Vicar in Madagascar, and Giuseppe Kiwanuka has been elected Apostolic Vicar of Masaka.
