P.M.’s Order Disobeyed: Serious Development

CANBERRA, June 2

A serious development has arisen in connection with a contract for extensions to the Sydney General Post Office to cost £400,000. The Prime Minister, Mr R. G. Menzies, under pressure from the Country and Labour parties announced in the House of Representatives today that an official of the Sydney Post Office had signed a contract binding the Government with a firm of contractors in spite of the fact that he (Mr Menzies) on the day before had given instructions that the contract should not be signed pending an inquiry as to whether the Lyons Government's plan for the use of sandstone instead of terracotta should be adopted. The Prime Minister admitted that he was very worried about the disobedience of his orders, and said he had granted a request for a Royal Commission to inquire into the whole circumstances. \
