Chess Players Travel Miles To Kaikohe

Fourteen members of the Kaikohe Chess Club took part in a ladder tournament on Thursday, but only one changed his position, Allen defeating Hurley.

Keen interest was displayed in the challenge entered by Corpe to Johnson. The first game was drawn, and it was not until a late hour that Johnson managed to break down the attack of his opponent to win the second.

Games finished were: —Allen, 2 wins, defeated Hurley; Rollings, 1 win. leads Slatter (still in play): Lowe, 2, defeated Smith; Johnson, U, defeated Corpe, Macdermott, 1, drew with Jackson. 1; Moor, 2, defeated Watson.

The Kaikohe Chess Club is the only group in Northland, and it speaks much for the enthusiasm of its members when the players gather from as far afield as Umawera, Awarua, Mataraua and Waimatenui. Membership Now 19. Two new members have been enrolled, bringing the number of active players to 19. Mr K. S. Allen, a recent arrival In Kaikohe from Dunedin, will prove an acquisition to the club. Mr Allen has represented Dunedin at competitive play in other centres and brings to the club a wide experience of the game.
