Cars for Economy
It is encouraging to the man of limited means to know that in the past few years considerable research has been made into the question qf running costs. Whereas a 10 h.p. to 12 h.p. car a few years ago was doing quite well if the Ten gave. say. 30 m.p.g. and the Twelve 25 m.p.g., we now expect figures of 25-40 m.p.g. from a Ten and nearer 30 m.p.g. from a Twelve. The Eight, of course, gives a surprisingly high mileage to the gallon—easily 40 m.p.g. with a full load of four passengers and their luggage. Oil consumption is an almost negligible figure in running costs; every new or recent model should do over 1000 m.p.g. and the cost per year is light. , When buying bigger cars, where the initial outlay is not such a major consideration and where running costs do not concern the owner to the same extent as they would the small-car man, the same detailed attention does not appear to have been given, so that if a figure of about 18-20 m.p.g. for cars of the 20 h.p. class and over is taken, one is not going far wrong when making choice of such a vehicle.
