Matapouri's “Centennial Holiday” Dance
To raise funds to send representative children from Matapouri to the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington with the excursion being organised by the “Northern Advocate's” Kupe Club, a “picture evening” and dance in the Matapouri Hall last evening netted a total of over £ 18.
Children, with the assistance of Mr T. O’Carroll, head teacher at Matapouri, and adults, were responsible for organising the function.
A produce stall, staffed by the children, obtained good results. The early part of the evening was devoted to a moving picture entertainment provided by Kupe, children’s editor of the “Northern Advocate.”
Dancing followed, with Messrs E. J. Bines and J. Pullman as M.C.’s. Music was supplied by members of Ces Wright’s band. A Monte Carlo competition was won by Mrs Fred Howe and Mr Percy Carter.
With Mr Ces Wright as auctioneer, good business was turned over for a cooked rooster purchased by Mr Percy Carter, re-donated and bought by Mr D. Clark. This netted a total of 12/6. The mystery parcel, donated by Mr Carter, brought 3/6 in auction and was sold to Mr F. Clements.
A musical game for the children was won by Master Clements. Shot that day by Mr J. W. Bines, a hawk of phenomenal weight and wing span was the subject of a guessing competition. The wing span was 4ft 10* ins. Mr E. R. Simmons took the
1 prize. Mr T. O’Carroll thanked Kupe and the musicians for their support, and Kupe congratulated Matapouri on the outstanding success of the evening. It was, he said, the very best effort to date and put Matapouri definitely at the top of the list for the Centennial i Holiday Fund.
