The German consul at Wellington has advised that about 105.000 cases of apples, valued at £56,598 3/1, were bought by Germany in May. The Attorney-General, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, stated today that consideration had been given to the judgment of Mr Justice Callan in the test case brought by F. E. Jackson and Co., Auckland, against the Collector of Customs for wrongful detention of imported goods under the import control regulations, and it had been decided to appeal to the Court of Appeal. About 1600 electors voted in the first hour after the booths opened in the Christchurch South by-election today. On these figures it is expected that the poll will not be as heavy as at the general election, when 13,775 votes were cast.
