DUNEDIN. This Day.
In the Police Court the Dunedin City Council was proceeded against by the Transport Department on an information alleging that it had carried on a passenger service other than pursuant to its authority. The case, stated counsel for the department, rested upon the interpretation of the words “special occasion” in the Act. It was, contended that hiring buses for a school picnic and to members of Oddfellows’ lodges, which were two of the eight alleged offences, were not Special occasions. The tramways manager said that the corporation refused applications for buses when it was not a private party or a special occasion. Counsel for the defence said no means of regular transport were available at the times required. All the cases were of private parties.
The magistrate reserved his decision.
