HOLIDAY RACING
Interest in Great Northerns Programme for Tomorrow’s Events
rpHE PICTURESQUE ELLERSLIE RACECOURSE WILL BE THE MECC
OF SPORTSMEN FROM ALL PARTS OF THE DOMINION TO-MOR-
ROW, WHEN THE GREAT NORTHERN MEETING OF THE AUCKLAND
RACING CLUB WILL BE COMMENCED.
The winter racing season will also be inaugurated by meetings tomorrow at Wanganui, Napier and Dunedin, the racing in each instance being continued on Monday next, the King s Birthday.
Followers of the light harness sport will find interest in the special meeting of the Methven Trotting Club, also being held to-moiiow.
Chief interest at Ellerslie will be centred round the Great Northern Hurdles and the Cornwall Handicap, the principal events on to-morrow’s programme.
28, the race will bo run in two divisions, but the totalisator will be open once only.
The G.N. Hurdles,
The acceptances arc as follows: — GREEN LANE STEEPLECHASE.
The withdrawal of Bryce Street and Sporting Song leaves a field of 18 in the Great Northern Hurdles. The race bears a very open aspect, and indications are that there will be a wide range of fancies. As a result of their good showing at the recent Te Rapa meeting, Agog and Royal Dance are a favoured pair. Pyrenees would have a great chance of success if rain before to-morrow makes the ground heavy, as he has previously shown his ability to race under such conditions. Erination, top weight with 11.11, has had only one race over several months, and, good horse as he undoubtedly is, many of the lighter weights make more appeal. Esteem would have to show considerable improvement on his Te Rapa form if he is to turn the tables on Royal Dance. A good showing is expected from Charade, who is very well at present. However, the distance may be against her. Mio Lume stays well and, as the winner of the Brighton Hurdles, will have many friends. Eh Tour is another stayer who should run a solid race. John Charles won the Winter Hurdles at Trentham two years ago, and is a safe fencer who will see out the journey. Celtic Lad and Lady England have no recent form to recommend them. Inness Lad is improving with every race, and is not without a good chance. Pyrenees should account for the others on the minimum, although Smilin’ Thru has a stayer's chance. An interesting race should be witnessed, and, with a wish that each contestant will share in the luck of the running, we favour the chances of Agog, Pyrenees and Inness Lad. The Cornwall Handicap. Te Rapa form should be the guide to favouritism, in the Cornwall Handicap, thus assuring solid support for Gay Rose, Royevrus and Valmint. Balinavar won the Tauranga Cup at Easter, and although beaten at Te Rapa, he is nicely placed to-morrow, and he is expected to be prominent in the run home. Cheval de Volee is not consistent, but, as he likes the soft going, the Auckland Cup winner should be considered. Gold Vaals has been placed three times in his last six starts, and Galilee was successful at Pukokohe. Tooley Street is a good horse in heavy going, and would bo one of the hardest to beat if on form. Gay Rebel was second to Gay Rose at To Rapa, and appears to be the pick of the lightweights. Royal Appellant would be a good prospect if he could recover his autumn form. What appears to bo a very open race may be fought out between Royevrus, Valmint and Balinavar,
Form Fancies, Betting will bo under the win-and-place system, and the following horses may be in demand: — Greenlane Steeples: Wasp, Mahala, Bells of Bow. Jervois Handicap: Bronwen, Bonnybelle; May Song, Ramleh. Penrose Hurdles: King Musk. Little Briton, Electric Flash. G.N. Hurdles: Agog, Pyrenees, Inness Lad. Cornwall Handicap: Royevrus, Valmint, Balinavar. Hunt Club Hurdles: Kittle, Windsor Lass, British Sovereign. Members’ Handicap: Marie’s Acre,. Aero King, Erndale. In the event of the number of starters in the Jervois Handicap exceeding the course safety number of
Agog Was Bargain Horse. Agog, now one of the favourites for the Great Northern Hurdles, was sold to his present owner for £2O. He has since won £BOO. Agog is trained by I. Tucker, who, when connected with the Hawera stable of J. Fryer, won the Great Northern Steeplechase on Copey and the Great Northern Hurdles on Make Up. Tucker also rode with success in Melbourne.
Jockey Disqualified. The former New Zealand jockey, A. Driscoll, was disqualified by Hie Ballarat stewards for 12 months. Dishonourable and improper practices were alleged against Driscoll in connection with the running of Elegance in a steeplechase at the meeting. Elegance, ridden by Driscoll, finished second to Testudo Driscoll entered a protest against Testudo and this was dismissed. K. Bones, the owner-trainer of Elegance, was exonerated.
