Strong Appeal for N.M.R. Enrolments, Which Now Total 3322
[Per Press Association.—Copyright] WELLINGTON, This Day. rpHE TOTAL ENROLMENTS IN ALL CLASSES OF THE NATIONAL A MILITARY RESERVE UP TO YESTERDAY MORNING WAS 3322, AN INCREASE OF 760 SINCE THE PREVIOUS DAY.
“The response has been good, but there is room for improvement, -said the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, who arrived at Christchurch yesterday on an official visit.
“When I made my appeal I was hoping the defence and postal officials would not be able to hand out enrolment cards fast enough. However, the universal response on the part of the men of New Zealand is the best reply to those who advocate compulsory military training. “It is indeed satisfactory that free men can combine in,their own defence. The system today is very different from the old idea that men should be compelled to serve. “When I made my broadcast appeal 1 made it plain that men were not, being asked to go to war, but to be pr epared to defend their own country.
“Democratic institutions today are in the melting pot. It is up to every man to demonstrate the faith that is fn him.”
