I.R.A. Outrages In Belfast

LONDON, May 30

A “pirate” radio station somewhere in Ireland announced that 1000 gas masks would be* burned in Belfast streets as a symbol of British rule, says the “Daily Mail.” Members of the Irish Republican Army within an hour, assembled 500 men and burned 500 and 200 petrolsoaked as masks respectively in two districts of Belfast. The men then made a house-to-hcuse search in Cyprus Street for more masks, and hurried to the street prepared to burn them, when a policeman on. a bicycle exchanged shots with the men.

This alarmed the barracks, whence police poured in to the scene in armoured cars, motor lorries and flying squad cars. They scattered the Republicans, and fist fights and chases followed, but many of the masks were not recovered.
