Hikurangi Falls to Portland

It was also fast open football that gave Portland the decision over Hikurangi. Although Hikurangi was deprived of the services of a number of its best players through illness, Portland’s was a well-merited win. Excellent combination was evident among the backs, among whom Wallbank and Flesher made the pace, with their handling, speed and judgment. ' George Mackie played a good fullback’s game, but there was little to choose between the remainder.

Raisbeck, Hikurangi’s half, did not show up to his usual form and was slow in getting the ball out. He was eventually replaced by Lucas, who gave the backs a better share. Raisbeck in turn played quite well as five-eighth. F. O’Callaghan carried the bulk of the load in the pack, while of the backs Stringfellow, wing, and Rod Hamilton, centre, performed well under difficult circumstances.
