Three Naval Training Ships For New Zealand

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.

At a cost of £185,000, three new vessels of modern, trawler type are to be purchased from Britain by the New Zealand Government for naval training work. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, has announced that the vessel will be of a type developed in Britain for mine-sweeping and antisubmarine work, tmd the order for their construction has already been placed. The Minister has also announced that plans have been prepared for the removal of the upper portion of H.M.S. Philomel, at the Devonport Naval Base, also the building of an administration office. When that work was completed it would be possible to shift the seamen boys from the Philomel ashore, so that the Philomel could be partially reconstructed to provide accommodation in the future for boys entering the navy. Mr Jones said that instead of sending men to Australia for specialised courses they would be able to get instructions at the Devonport Naval j Base. It would not eliminate sending j men overseas, but a considerable | amount would be saved.
