Britain And France Loyal To The League
LONDON, May 23,
Messages from Geneva state that, at the beginning of the afternoon’s public session of the League of Nations Council, both the British Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax, and the French Foreign Minister, M. Bonnet, emphasised the continued loyalty of Britain and France to the League. . - Lord Halifax recalled the events which had shaken Europe since last September, and stated that, while it had been impossible to use the League’; machinery to put into effect the various measures which Britain thought it necessary to take to prevent the domination of Europe by force, both Britain and France would use the earliest favourable opportuninty to apprise the Council of the results of a series of negotiations and arrangements carried out and arrived at by the Governments concerned. •‘These,” added Lord Halifax, “are definitely in the spirit of the League and designed to uphold its high ideals of security, order and peace.”
