Island Evacuated By ’Quake Refugees
NEW YORK, May 23,
Reports that Verde Island, Phillipines group, which has been subjected to a fortnight of earthquakes terrorising the 4000 inhabitants, was rapidly sinking into the sea, were denied by Governor Caedo, of Batangas Province, states the Manila correspondent of the Associated Press.
Governor Caedo admitted, however, that several hundreds of Verde’s population had already crossed the 10-mile channel to the coast of Batangas Province, and confirmed the whole report that the populous was preparing to evacuate the island. Red Cross workers and a constabulary patrol had been sent to aid the refugees.
Geologists state that the structural formation of the earth’s crust is causing the earthquakes, but there is no danger of a volcanic eruption.
