Petrol Tax Worries County Councils
v Grave and continued concern is being experienced by county councils on account of the existing petrol taxation and highway maintenance system, contended Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, chairman of the Whangarei County Council, at the council’s annual meeting today. “A large proportion of the heavy load on road users through the petrol tax is not being made available to local bodies nor to the Main Highways Board,” he explained.
“While the volume of revenue from petrol taxation is increasing, local bodies are obliged to increase their rates, and the Main Highways Board to borrow heavily. This is extremely unfair and unreasonable, as the original object of imposing ,a tax on petrol was to ease the burden of rating for road purposes. “The New Zealand Counties’ Association continues to urge upon the Government the justice of providing from petrol taxation a £1 for £1 subsidy on all expenditure on roads other than highways, in lieu of the present subsidy on general rates, a policy consistently advocated by this council.”
