County Reaches 62nd Year
On the occasion of the 62nd annua* meeting of the Whangarei County Council today, the chairman, Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, paid a tribute to the pioneers who had laid the foundation of the sound development and prosperity of the county. “To the fast-fading pioneers who laid this foundation we owe much,” he said.
“In this connection, and now that ■we are rapidly approaching our Centennial Jubilee, let me repeat the recent observations of a well-known public man who, , in acknowledgment of the work and worth of our pioneers, said: ‘So long as the spirit of the pioneers is kept alive, so long will New Zealand fulfil her destiny as a progressive nation, but let that spirit vanish, and with it will disappear our future development and prospects of our ultimate survival. Let our resolve for Centennial year be to keep burning in the second century the torch of the pioneer spirit and endeavour.’ “We, sitting at this table at this paiticular time, must appreciate the significance of these words.” .
Mr Mac Kay congratulated past and present councils and the people of the county on the steady progress in reading development and general administration of the county.
