Farmers Pay for Hospitals
No other country in the world ccmpsls its farmers to pay such a heavy proportion of the cost in respect of hospital treatment, contended Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, Whangarei county chairman, when reporting to the council at its annual meeting today.
"The cry of a year ago, ‘free hospital treatment for all’ has not materialised, but an increased burden has fallen in no uncertain way on our people,” he said.
“As recently pointed out, the levy on this county has in two years increased by 56.44 per cent,” he went on. “The levy for the current year is in the vicinity of £BOOO, which requires a rate of approximately lid in the £.
“The rise in annual levy is not peculiar to this district, but is general throughout the Dominion, the increase in some districts being much greater than in this county.”
