Broadwood Again Tops In Hokianga

After a fortnight’s play, Hokianga teams are beginning to come up to form. Broadwood, last year’s winners, have a powerful side again, which has given two fine exhibitions.

Unfortunately some of the matches do not start on time, with the result that they finish in ihe dark. This was so with the Mntukarakn vi Pawafenga match last Saturday. D. Beazlcy and B. Hodgson gave stalwart service for Motukaraka. Their style of play could be copied to advantage by other members of the team.

Jimmy Spanhake. a newcomer to Hokianga Rugby has strengthened the Motukaraka side. He is to be commended for bis knowledge of the (me points. Ling in Limelight. For Broadwood on Saturday, Ling. Dodds and Martin snowed up well amongst a good pack of hard-working forwards. Ling played with his usual dash, and was going great guns rigid In ilie iinisii. Mis heady leadership certainly inspires his team. The North Auckland selector must again keep this player in mind for representative honours. Dodds' two tries were the result of fast following-up, which is a regular feature of his play. The Broadwood backs played very well, the Edwards-Welch-Yming combination being very destructive, their

penetrating attack upsetting the opposition on many occasions.

Young is an ideal five-eighths, varying Ins play, and always being a dangerous scoring man with his dashes straight for the line. Butler, at full back, although young in years, played like a veteran, and was a tower of strength to his side. This player should prove outstanding; within the next few seasons.

For Waiwhaka, Morunga. and Williams were outstanding in the pack, while Te Tai and Ngarapo were easily the pick of the backs. The Waiwhaka team for the first half played with dash, but in the second half it was easy to distinguish the men who have been playing for many seasons. and refuse to bow to Father Time and more youthful players. Senior. Draw.

The draw for the first round of the senior championship, home teams named first, is as follows: —

May 27th. —Seniors; Motukaraka v. Waiwhaka. Hangiahua v. Pawarenga, Maraeroa v. Broadwood. June 3rd. —Motukaraka v. Rangiahua, Waiwhaka v. Maraeroa. Broadwood v. Pawarenga. June 10th. —Rangiahua v. Waiwhaka, Pawarenga v. Maraeroa. Broadwood v. Motukaraka.
