Centennial Challenge To New Zealand

“It is better for 800 people to donate £1 each for a Centennial memorial costing £BOO than for one man to give the wholb amount,’’ declared Mr J. W. Heenan, Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, when speaking at the Auckland Provincial Centennial Executive meeting in Whangarei on Saturday nighc. “It is still better for 1600 people to give 10/- each.” he went on. “One thing I have noticed is that, while there is'a good zone-conscious-ness, there is not such a good sub-z.one consciousness,” continued Mr Heenan. “We are looking forward to Auckland’s participation in the Centennial as one of the highlights of the celebrations. ’“North Auckland literally reeks with historical interest. . The Real Challenge. “The real home of our nation, is 'still in the North. “We are passing through troublous times ,and you are working hard to get your finances so necessary for this work. It should not be an unhappy experience, as it is our response to the challenge or this very slight turn of events that will lead to our being judged by posterity. Nothing in the way of temporary financial depression will set us back in our Centennial • arrangements. “Twenty years ago, 16,000 of our men died for this country. Can we not at least live for it in 1940 to make it greater?”
