Motor Tyre Prices Increased
j [ Special io “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
An increase of 5 per cent in the wholesale and retail price of motor tyres in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand has taken effect during the past few days, and it is expected in seme quarters of the retail trade that further increases may follow in the near future. The explanation given by the tyro distributing companies is that the rise is due to increases in the cost of raw material, but it is generally attributed by retailers to the effects of the Government import regulations, which have reduced the total quantity ported tyres by 15 to 20 per cent. Before making the increase, the New Zealand distributors communicated with their principals abroad. Stocks of tyres in the Dominion, supplemented by imports on the present restricted basis, are expected to | be adequate for requirements for some time ahead, as they had been well maintained, and in some directions increased, before the Government’s import regulations came into j operation'. j Prior to last week’s increase, the j price of tyres had been steady for a j considerabl period.
